Training Pathway Requirements

Course Breakdown

  • A 4-year part-time psychotherapy training, building on the Level 6 Diploma.
  • The first three years mirror the counselling training structure (theory, skills, practice), but training goes deeper to meet Level 7 standards.
  • Year 4 focuses on intrapsychic and interpersonal change, exploring concepts like script cure, de-confusion, transference, and countertransference.
  • Includes a research component: trainees complete self-directed tasks and a research essay on topics such as integration, ethics, diversity.
  • Provides mental health familiarisation, including a placement, to deepen understanding of pathology from a Transactional Analysis perspective.
  • Emphasis on unconscious processes via TA relational theory (e.g., co-creative contracting, script deconfusion) to support a mature therapeutic stance.
  • Trainees undergo personal therapy and clinical supervision throughout, developing both self-awareness and professional competence.
  • Successful completion of the Diploma fulfils UKCP / HIPC criteria, enabling graduates to apply for UKCP registration as psychotherapists, after they have passed the accrediation process (after course completion).
  • The training is grounded in a relational and developmental philosophy, reflecting TA’s “I’m OK, You’re OK” ethos, and promotes inclusive, co-creative learning.
  • Delivered in a supportive learning environment, with experienced trainers and a strong community, encouraging personal growth as well as professional skill.

Other costs

TA101

TA101 is a 12 hour course which provides an introduction to Transactional Analysis. Completing this is a requirement of the Core Theory Year (year 1 of psychotherapy or counselling training) though we recommend you do this before starting with us.

The current cost of this is £185.00 (£155 + vat)

Therapy and supervision

For psychotherapy and counselling training you will also need to meet other requirements alongside your academic work with us. This includes undergoing personal therapy yourself, and undertaking clinical work which will need to be professionally supervised.

You will need to contract with a therapist and with a supervisor and pay them directly. These costs are not included in our course fees. Fees can vary and we advise that you take some time to find the right therapist and the right supervisor for you. As a guide, you can expect to pay £50 – £60 per hour. You can do a number of hours of group therapy and group supervision which may reduce the cost to you personally.

Supervision is required on a 1:6 basis – you need one hour of supervision for every six hours of clinical work that you undertake.

A guide to how many hours of therapy and clinical work can be found in the course handbook

Conferences

Conferences are an important part of your experience and you should attend at least one regional or national therapy conference during your time with us

EngageMent

EngageMent is a two part training course. Advanced student are advised to take the Engage (part 1) module prior to practice. The ‘Ment’ (part 2) module is recommended for students in their third year.
