A word from the editor
Hello! How are you?
And just like that, September is here again. How have you been? Hope you enjoyed your summer and are all raring to go for the new academic year.
The wider world has thrown us all some changes in the last couple of weeks and everyone will be impacted in different ways. We are sending our best to those that are taking the time to think about loved ones, and strength to those coping with events closer to home.
A huge welcome to our new Core Theory Year students and those students joining (or re-joining) us in
advanced years. We have 17 new CTY students coming to us this month, as well as rejoiners in Year 1
Advanced, and in the Y2/Y3 group. Everyone else – we are delighted to see you back with us again for more fun and learning in the world of TA.
This month, we are looking forward to the conference, hearing from our ED&I committee about what they’ve been doing, getting an insight into working with children and young people, and announcing the return of Skills Practice Sundays.
If you have anything to share with us, have questions, or would like to know anything more about anything on here, you know where we are.

At ECPT, we have four different committees as well as a student rep committee. We are always looking for
more volunteer members for each of them to continue the valuable role in overseeing the work of ECPT.
The four committees are Equalities, Diversity & Inclusion, Ethics, Training Standards, and Accreditation.
The Student rep committee is made up of students from all year groups. We meet three times a year to discuss issues from a student perspective. Many ideas have been implemented through the work of this group and the feedback is always invaluable.
If you would like to serve on any of these committees, please do get in touch firstname.lastname@example.org and your enquiry will be forwarded to the head/chair of each committee.

Working with children and young people
CYP Mental Health
Did you know that 1 in 6 children aged 5-16 years old are likely to have a mental health problem? In the last three years, the likelihood of young people having a mental health problem has increased by 50%. 17-22 year old women are the group most at risk of developing a mental health problem.
CYP Post-Qualifying Diploma in TA & Integrative Psychotherapy
As qualified adult therapists, are you interested in expanding your skill set and client group and feel working towards a formal award with CYP would be advantageous in your clinical practice? Would an understanding of working with CYP be helpful in expanding your knowledge of the family context we and our clients are part of and what it is like for CYP to navigate family systems? Our 2-year CYP Post Qualifying Diploma runs from January to December. We work with individual therapists to create their own learning plans to get what they need to achieve their goals. This ‘add-on’ course is designed so parts can be attended as standalone modules for example, Infant Observation.
APL (Previous Training/Hours/Experience)
As part of the individual learning plans, we look at relevant previous training and experience and account for these as part of your individual learning plan so it is always worth having a discussion with us as to what can count towards the award, for example, mental health placement experience.
Why I work with CYP
Every day is different! No two children are the same. I like being able to provide a difference earlier. As an adult, the exploration of my own inner child, and being open to reflect and understand familiar feelings of shame and guilt have been lifechanging. I have gained so much from training, personal therapy and supervision as an adult. This then arouses my curiosity as to how different I would be if my experience had been different as a child. If I had a safe space for me to explore my confusion, my scare. With someone who seemed genuinely interested in me, who didn’t judge me, but who was interested in what I had to say and validate my feelings, all my feelings. That it was okay to be me and helped me explore a different way of being. For me working with CYP is a rich rewarding experience, observing children and young people and responding to what they might be communicating through their behaviour and play. Creating age-appropriate strategies to work with all age groups. The use of objects, sand-trays, storytelling, nesting dolls, buttons and stones to name but a few. Really anything creative that builds trust, encourages them to talk about their issues and for them to feel empowered.
Please contact me if you wish to chat about joining in January or if it’s something that you would like to
explore to see if it’s for you in the future. Look forward to seeing how we can work together.
Best wishes Sara, CYP Training Development Lead.

Emma Pooley is running an essay writing workshop for all new students on the 27th September from 6pm to 8pm. While this is primarily for Core Theory Year students, there may be space for Advanced Year 1 students to also attend. The session will also be recorded and uploaded to the website.
Thank you to Emma for running this. We are sure it will be very useful, particularly for those unfamiliar with writing essays. We will send out the invite to Core Theory Year students as soon as possible and communicate any spaces we may have available for others as soon as we can.
