Ellesmere Counselling and Psychotherapy Training Newsletter

January 2022

A word from the editor

Happy New Year!

How have you been? Our little community seems to have been impacted by covid this month more than
before and we thank you in your support in getting our classes back online for what will hopefully be a short period. If you’re suffering or having to isolate right now, we wish you well and are willing you on for a return to normal very soon.

This month, we have some news for you about a writing support group, a placement opportunity with a
wonderful local organisation, and, in response to your feedback, we’ve set up some useful events and
workshops. If you’re looking for more time to practice your skills, then keep reading.

We have an update from our Student Support team too, and if you’re an accredited therapist and can offer therapy or supervision to our students, you might want to get in touch.

Stay strong! January with its 84 days will be over soon and we can get on with welcoming some more chicks to the ECPT nest in February.

Accreditation Update

For those seeking extra support in writing to Level 7 standard for Psychotherapy accreditation, we have laid on some online writing support sessions with Barbara

Accreditation follow up sessions – Academic Writing at Level 7 with Barbara Clarkson
Venue: Zoom – online
Dates: 16th Feb and 12th April, 10am to 2pm both dates
Cost: £140 (inc vat) total for both sessions

Session 1 – the foundations of academic writing including structure and referencing, how to produce enough analysis, critique and synthesis in a case study. A look at the marking criteria, and how to apply the terms alongside the competencies

Session 2 – building on session one and including opportunities to get live feedback and support, led by the group agenda and your requests for clarity and feedback

If you would like a place on this, please email admin@ellesmerecentre.co.uk ASAP. We would like to be able to firm up numbers for this by the end of January.

Diversity Survey

Thank you to everyone who completed the equalities, diversity and inclusion survey that a group of Year 1
Advanced students are carrying out as part of their work on ED&I.

If you haven’t yet completed it and have some time to do so, that would be much appreciated.
The survey is at >> Diversity Survey of Ellesmere Students

The students say…..

We are a group of first year advanced students at the Ellesmere Centre who are working on our group project on Equality and Diversity in Psychotherapy. We thought it would be a good idea to gather our own data so we can learn about how diverse (or not) our community of students are across all the year groups.

We will present our findings later in the academic year to our cohort alongside our academic research on the impact of a lack of diversity in the therapy room. The survey should take no longer than 5 minutes to
complete. All answers will be treated in confidence. Your answers will of course remain anonymous – no one will know who has said what as we have set up the form so that the responses are not linked to email
addresses. If you start the survey and then change your mind about participating, you can stop at any time.

The findings of the survey will contribute to our group project and our practice as trainee therapists. If you have any questions, please contact {Name anonymised}

Student Support News

Happy new year to all trainees at ECPT from the Pastoral and Student Support Team.

We hope you are all settling back into normality following the Christmas break and not suffering too much with the January blues. The student support team now have a confidential email address where you can contact us directly if you feel you need some help and support. We are here to support you throughout your training journey with any issue big or small.

Many of you will have submitted your first essay of the year and are waiting for the feedback. I remember how this felt in my first few years and how my “Be Perfect and Be Strong” were hard at work when it came to essays and presentations. The hardest, but also the most beneficial thing I did was to eventually ask for help. I felt vulnerable and a quite exposed asking someone to proofread my essays but the feedback I received on the structure and content was so helpful. This is also a great way to check for any spelling or grammatical errors and to get a feel for how your essay connects with the reader.

I also wish that I had talked to my peers about my essays and presentations during peer group sessions. If I had done this, I think I might have realised that others were struggling with similar issues, and it would have been great to have exchanged essay and presentation idea’s and discussed feedback with my group. It took me a long time to realise I didn’t need to “Be Strong” and do everything on my own!

If you want to discuss any aspect of the training, please get in touch via the confidential email address. This is a unique training experience and talking things through with someone who has “been there” can really help.”
These can be academic issues relating to the course, essays, end of year paperwork etc, or relationships with peers, trainers, supervisors, or more personal issues that are affecting you. We are happy to talk through any concern you may have or just be a sounding board if you are not quite sure who to speak to.

Good luck with the rest of the training year.

Jo, Kate and Mary.

If you are an accredited therapist and able to offer therapy sessions to our students, or an accredited supervisor able to offer supervision to our trainees and graduates, please get in touch. We have a list of therapists and supervisors which is updated regularly, and we are welcoming inclusion for suitable persons.
